I wouldn't suggest the Happy Trails system either. I lost a case in baja due to vibration on crap roads similar to you.

Hi Tyson, I find your adventures to be fascinating and am surprised at how you travelled so far and did so much on a 400cc m/c. I am only beginning to explore "adventure touring" and would appreciate being able to contact you for advice on equipment if possible, if not I understand. One immediate question I have for you is if you feel that after all your experience with the 400 that the klr 650 is more durable and better suited to these long distance adventures, or even possibly the VStrom 650, although not being as purely offroad oriented, with the twin cylinders and greater horsepower it may make the time between destinations go faster as well as easier and in more comfort, any thoughts you may provide are appreciated. I do feel that the large BMW's (1 litre +) are overkill and to unwieldy and technically specialized should one incur a breakdown

This really is a dream of a life time tour, so beautiful valleys and vast horizon, no matter what it takes one should must have a tour like this and amazing facts which are mentioned in the post are also amazing to read. Really full marks for the post from me.

Good story, which I agree with. But to let you know, I also own a motorcycle shop in Ontario. I was conducting my Safety Check mostly like The Bike Yard, at the same price, $45, flat rate.
But, for the first time in 10 years, I got a complainte frm a customer that got a tail burned out, 3 months after the Safety Check I did. Worst, he called an MTO officer to his house to inspect his motorcycle, the Office put the licence off the bike because he judge that the handlebars were too loose and the brake line was touching the gas tank when the sterring was turn to max...

Well, that was enough for him to come to my shop for a surprise inspection, and telling me that I screwed up that inspection 3 months ago. I argue that, the guy been riding for 3 months and done over 4,000 km, and I have no way to know if he dropped his bike or not...

Bottom line, I had to surrender my Safety Standard Certification...

Bullshit you say, your right. All shop got different way to approach a Safety check on a bike, plus, if followed by the MTO book line by line, almost no bike would pass...

I had the same problem until I took my bike to Ultimate Cycle in Hamilton. I first went to two major dealerships in the area and they tried to hose me. Finally Bryan at Ultimate fixed me up and told me that my bike was in excellent condition and passed the safety without any repairs. I find that nowadays that the major dealrs are the crooks and the smaller guys that have passion for riding are honest and end up going the extra mile.

Funny I've had mine on a 1100gs for 4 years and over 40k miles of rough roads throughout Asia. The racks are holding up well. The bushing are wearing out and I bent a latch and nearly ground a hole in one of the pelicans during crash.
But the racks are fine! Go figure!
